The town of Velingrad was founded in 1948 after the three villages of Chepino, Ladzhene, and Kamenitsa became united. Presently these villages are separate districts of the town. Velingrad is named after the Bulgarian people’s heroine Vela Peeva who died in her prime on May 3rd, 1944. With its unique blend of balneological and weather components, the town of Velingrad has grown into a resort with a nationwide and international significance. It is situated in the Chepino Valley - the most gorgeous part of the Western Rhodopes Mountain. Velingrad’s above sea altitude is 750 meters which places it among the lower-altitude mountain resorts. Here are a few particulars about the geographical positioning of this beautiful town. It is located in the western segment of the Chepino Valley, near the boundary between the Rhodopes and the Rila mountain, and on the left of the Chepinska River, along the Elenka River and the Lukovitsa River which happen to be currents of the Chepinska River. The town is enclosured with the stunning flanks of the Rhodopes Mountains. The Batashka mountain with its Sjutka division and the peak Goliama Sjutka (2186 meters) is on the south of Velingrad. On the east side, the Strazhata hill towers up; on the north and the west the Alabak hill range runs across with the Chernovets peak (1834 meters) and the Milevi Skali peak (1593 meters). The impressive landscape is supplemented by a pleasantly soft climate. The atmosphere pressure is low - 693 mm mercury. The annual duration and intensity of sun days is rather lengthy. The air is crystalline. There are no strong winds, so winters are quite and pleasant. Over the Chepino valley there blows the warm south wind which is known as ‘’the white wind’’ and the all-year local wind called ‘’the nightfall wind’’. This particular wind brings about the nightly temperature lowering. |
