Topolovgrad  region/town

Topolovgrad

The municipality of Topolovgrad includes parts of the Tundzha river valley and the Sakar mountain. The relief of the region is lowland and hilly. Due to its geographic position the region enjoys mild winters, early springs, and warm autumns. The average yearly rainfall estimate per square meter is 500-600 mm- lower than the national average and random in its seasonal distribution. A great variety of coniferous and broad-leaved vegetation covers one-third of the region's territory.

The region has deposits of mineral resources- sand, gravel, marble, granite, and quartz contributing to economic development.

One of the major industrial sites in the region is the Topolovgrad based Ustrem EAD plant, producers of marble blocks, tiles, steps, granite blocks, pave and curb stones and recyclers of semi-finished metallurgical products and poly metallic ores. Ustrem EAD has been slated for in-cash privatization.

The traditional sector of the economy is machine building with Mediotechnca LTD manufacturing medical equipment and instruments and slated for in-cash privatization.

Vishegrad EAD and Obosobeno Proizvodstvo plants have excelled in the manufacture of parts for the military industry with Vishegrad EAD offered for voucher privatization. The clothing industry is represented by two local firms, one of which will also be offered for voucher privatization.

A major industrial site is theTopolovgrad-Bulgartabac EAD tobacco producing plant whose principal activities include purchasing, processing and exporting tobacco nationally and internationally. This plant is also slated to be privatized by voucher.

Agriculture in the region is represented by cultivating grain crops, technical crops including sunflower and tobacco, and perennial plants-mostly vineyards. Arable land totals 242 hectares with 205 hectares of corn fields and 12 hectares of perennial plants. Twenty-seven private cooperatives and partnerships cultivate the majority of the agricultural land.

Topolovgrad has a rich cultural tradition: hosting the National Festival of Amateur Comedy, Theater, Satire and Miming; offering a gallery with over 300 masterpiece paintings from prominent Bulgarian artists; presenting a museum collection in excess of 6000 pieces of art and history; and proudly displaying numerous significant archeological artifacts including the nationally prominent Thracian rock-stone alter, Paleocastro.
