Radnevo region/town |
|||||||
The
Radnevo region is situated in the middle of the Thracian Plain covering an
area of 532 square kilometers with a population of 27,104. The town of
Radnevo's population is 15,814.
The municipality lies in a valley with an average altitude of 100 meters above sea level and enjoys a temperate climate averaging 12 degrees Celsius annually. Although woodlands are not plentiful there, the rich black earth with large humus stratums and moderate rainfall is highly beneficial to agricultural production. The greater part of the Maritza Iztok Basin with its lignite coal fields and electrical power plants is included in the Radnevo territory. The coal is low caloric, with high moisture content (63%), ashes (45%), and sulfur (4.5-5%). The area is rich in natural resources- gypsum, sand and gravel for the production of building of materials. Every year, as a result of electricity production, there is residue of 3,400,000 tons of slag and ashes mixture, 420,000 tons of sulfur dioxide, 105,000 tons of nitric oxides as well as smaller amounts of silicon, calcium, magnesium and other oxides. These materials present an opportunity for use in the building industry, thus reducing their negative influence on the environment. The major industrial sectors in the region are coal mining and electrical power production, followed by engineering of mine equipment, agricultural production and baking. Development of the fledgling industrial sector has been enhanced by the municipalities construction projects: vegetable processing factory, ketchup production facility and a mill. Projects also in development are a spirits factory, a transportation company, and a dairy production facility. Radnevo's territory has three dairies, two are private and one is state owned. They process milk into yogurt and cheese. The municipality has one slaughterhouse with a division for sausage production. The agricultural area in the region totals 386,549 decares. It is tilled by 29 agricultural cooperatives and some partnerships. Perennial crops are grown here including cherry, hazelnuts, and grapes but most widely cultivated are cereal crops- wheat and barley, and industrial crops- sunflower and cotton among others. |
