Jambol

  A town next to Toundzha River, 301 km east of Sofia. Population of 90 000. A station along the railway lines Sofia-Plovdiv-Bourgas and Zimnitsa-Elhovo. 

A Neolithic settlement mound has been uncovered on the territory of the town. 

7 km to the north-west are the ruins of the Thracian town Kabile, that sprang to life in the 2nd millennium B.C. Capital (4th-3rd centuries B.C.) of the Thracian ruler Spartacus. 

In the 2nd-3rd centuries it is the most significant bivouac and camp of the Roman province Thracia. Destroyed by the Avars in 583.

In the 11th-14th centuries the town is a martial and administrative center of Zagore district. In the 18th C. it is a trade and crafts center. 

The following sites of historical interest have been preserved: a roofed market (bazaar) dating back to the 16th C., Eski Mosque (16th C.), Sts. Spass and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, St. George Church (built in the 18th C. by master Gencho Kunev, reconstructed in 1882).
