The
municipality of Galabovo is situated in the south-eastern part of the
Upper Thracian Plains and includes part of the Sakar mountain in the south.
The region includes the town of Galabovo and ten villages with a total population of 18,000. The town of Galabovo has the greatest share of the population with 11,000 people, followed by the village of Obruchishte with 2,000 people, the villages of Glavan and Madrets with over 1,500 people each and the remaining population share of less than 2% comes from the villages of Velikovo, Razdelna, Mussachevo, and Iskritsa. Part of the Maritsa Iztok coal mining fields are found in the region where the primary natural resource is the lignite coal from the east Maritsa basin. Pink Well, a natural protected area since 1996 has become a valuable tourist resource for bird watchers. During the winter a great number of birds are found there including the 65 species protected by the Nature Protection Act. The region takes pride in its cultural and archaeological heritage with remnants from 23 ancient dwellings and tombstones found near the villages of Iskritsa and Madrets that are considered nationally significant. The open-air coal mining and power engineering industries play a major role in the regional economy but bring along with them advantages and disadvantages. The high rate of employment they provide is extremely advantageous, while the negative impact on the environment is a distinct disadvantage. Although the region has experienced no industrial privatization thus far, slated for voucher privatization are Maritsa Iztok, EAD transportation company and the division of the Stara Zagora based Zagaria EAD company for the milling of flour. Alongside power engineering, agriculture is an important economic sector in the Galabovo region. Land reform, returning it to original ownership is an ongoing process. Agricultural production is concentrated in 13 private cooperatives and by numerous private farmers. |
