Town in Dobroudzha, 514 km north-east of Sofia. Population of 104 000.
A station along the railway line Razdelna-Kardam. It appears as a Roman settlement in 2 - 4 c. In 17 c. it is a lively trading and crafts center of a rich agricultural region. In 19 c., by reason of political events and military operations, extensive migration from the town is observed. In 1673 - 1674 it is a camp of sultan Mehmed IV in his war against Poland. After the liberation of 1878 it is a bustling economic and cultural center. In 1913 - 1940 the town falls within the territory of Romania. At present part of the architecture dating back to the Bulgarian National Revival has been restored is restored as an ethnographic complex Old Dobrich. Churches "Sveti Georgi", "Sveta Troitsa" (1908 - 1912) are preserved, a monument of khan Asparouh has been raised, a house - monument of Yordan Yovkov - outstanding Bulgarian writer and playwright. A historical museum, a theatre and an art gallery. |
