Autobiography of Ane K Hansen

My Dear Children: I will now try and tell you a little of my past life. I do this that you may know what your mother and grandmother has passed through in her life on this earth.Birth: I was born March 3, 1839 at Toageren, Danmark. From the time I was seven years of age I was never home one summer, but was hired out to herd sheep, lambs, and geese. That was in the summer. In the fall I herded stock until the frost and snow was on the ground. Married: When I was thirteen I went to work for private families until I was twenty one. I was married to Rasmus Hansen November 11, 1849. After this I stayed home until February when I was hired out in the state for about fourteen months and then came home. On April 4, 1852, my first baby was born, and we named her Annie Christian Hansen. On August 30, 1856, the second girl was born, [illegible type: ??baria?] Fridrika, then we moved to Baldresbuynd. Embraced the Gospel: In the year 1855 my husband embraced the gospel. I joined the church and was baptized March 24, 1856. On August 36? Of the same year we began to prepare to come to Zion. We sold our home, but the war broke out so we couldn't go then. On February 11, 1859, my third girl was born, Josephine Marie. On December 25, 1861 my first boy was born and we named him Hans Peter Brigham. In 1862 we started for Zion, left our home April 16and set sail on the 18th. Myself and the baby were sick when we got to Florence. The baby but seven months old died July 27 and was buried at Florence. [illegible type] had to wait at Florence for seven weeks and three days on account of high water. While on the plains I also had to bury my little girl, Josephine, on August 6, 1882. She was the first one buried on the plains. Birth of Second Boy: My husband and oldest girl walked all the way across the plains. The second girl and I rode. We reached Salt Lake October 1, 1862, and stayed on the public square one week. From there we moved to Cache Valley, Utah and made buy home in Hyrum. October 25, 1863, my second boy was born. On May 9, 1864, we moved to Smithfield where we were perfect strangers. My husband worked on a farm. Hewent to work on August 31 as a well man, but was brought back at noon a very sick man. He had cramps caused from drinking bad water. He was in such pain he could not speak one word to me and on September 1, he died. Dear Children, it was hard to lose my children but that was only a beginning of my sorrow and I found it out on the day my husband was buried. There were three small children. And I was left without a home to shelter our heads. The Lord had not forgotten me and he had a work for me to do. Although my husband was not permitted to speak to me the second night after his death and told me where to go or counsel and I did so and put the counsel into practice when the time came. I met another partner to travel with for a time, but still my troubles and trials were not ended. But the Lord [illegible type] thing I could not stand, and I can promise you all, that if you will do what is right and keep his commandments, live your religion and follow the example your parents have set you, and live near to your God, he will bless you in the hour of need. [Addendum Text:] Ane Kirstine Pedersen, daughter of Peder Jorgensen and Ane Larsen, was the second of eight children. Her brothers and sisters were Lars, Birthe, Peder, Jorgen, Anne, Niels, and Rasmas. Other spelling of her Christian name as recorded in ward and temple records are: Annie, Anne, and Anna; and surname: Jorgensen, Yergensen, and Petersen. After Rasmus Hansen died, she married John Frederick Mack and had one child, Mary Ann. Her grandparents were Jorgen Pedersen and Anna Nielsen and Lars Anderson and his wife Ane Kirstine Sorensen. She died 3 Aug 1902 in Leigh, Teton, Idaho.
